If you are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada and you want to work temporarily in Canada, you must apply for a work permit.

Temporary work permit application

  1. The Canadian employer applies for a Labour Market Opinion. Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) will grant a positive Labour Market Opinion if it is satisfied that there is no Canadian worker suitable to fill the job role of the migrant.
  2. The Canadian employer or company extends a temporary job offer to the foreign skilled worker.
  3. The foreign skilled worker applies for a work permit online.
  4. A Canada Border Services Agency officer issues the Canada Temporary Work Permit to the foreign worker at their point of entry into Canada.

You may also need a temporary resident visa. Check theĀ list of countries and territories whose citizens need a visa.

Be aware that there are several immigration categories and you may fall into one that permits you to apply for a permanent resident visa.
